Solar Panel Care: 7 Things Every Owner Must Know

Solar panels are designed to be low maintenance but not zero maintenance. Neglecting basic care can reduce output by 20–30% over time.

1. Clean Panels Regularly Dust, bird droppings, and harmattan haze reduce light absorption. Clean panels every 2–4 weeks during dry season using clean water and a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive materials.

2. Check for Shading Even partial shading of one panel can reduce the output of the entire string. Trim trees or reposition panels that are developing shade problems.

3. Inspect Mounting Hardware Roof-mounted panels experience wind vibration. Inspect brackets and bolts annually for looseness or rust, especially after heavy storms.

4. Monitor Your Output Most modern inverters show daily output on their display or app. A sudden drop in output usually means a dirty panel, shade, or a faulty cell.

5. Check Wiring and Connectors UV exposure degrades cable insulation over time. Inspect DC cables for cracks, especially where they exit panels or enter conduit.

6. Watch for Hot Spots A damaged or shaded cell in a panel creates a "hot spot" that can permanently damage the panel. If you notice one panel getting much hotter than others, have it inspected.

7. Professional Annual Check Once a year, have a qualified solar technician inspect the full system including the inverter, batteries, and all connections.
